The Henderson Scout Reservation property in Maryland, NY where Leatherstocking Council scouts serving Herkimer, Oneida, Madison and parts of Hamilton, Otsego, Delaware and Lewis counties have been coming for years announcement the difficult decision to put the property up for sale to pay the council’s share of a multi-billion dollar nationwide settlement with survivors of abuse.
The Leatherstocking Council explains how this decision was made at leatherstockingcouncil.org/CampHenderson the main reason being that the council was denied permission to open Camp Henderson this summer after filing an “Intent to Operate”. This alone seriously limits the viability of the camp. The council adds that there are other significant factors that led to the decision to sell the camp, such as the fact that Camp Henderson requires considerable funds to maintain.
Compared to Camp Kingsley, another council-owned camp that’s more of a year-round facility with constant rentals, Camp Henderson just isn’t as viable as Camp Kingsley located in Ava, NY, north of Rome. . It also costs the Leatherstocking Council less to run the Kingsley camp and the council says it makes more sense to keep that camp. The council must have at least one camp for its scouts, so it is unable to sell all properties.
