Indian travelers prefer non-urban destinations like Haldwani, reports Jibhi Airbnb

After a two-year pandemic pause, Indian travelers are finally getting out of their homes and exploring places while choosing Airbnbs across India as their temporary home. According to the latest data from Airbnb, tourists like to enjoy the tranquility of nature and most likely prefer non-urban destinations like Haldwani, Jibhi, Bir and Varkala. Rental agency ‘Air Bed and Breakfast’ has revealed that its non-urban overnight bookings in India during the second quarter of calendar year 2022 saw a 140% improvement compared to the corresponding quarter in 2019.

According to data from Airbnb India, non-urban destinations like Haldwani, Jibhi, Bir and Varkala saw immense growth in search variety in Q2 2022 compared to Q2 2019. The data reveals that Haldwani and Uttarakhand have a growth of 330% while Jibhi, Himachal Pradesh grew by more than 270%. Additionally, Bir in Himachal Pradesh and Varkala in Kerala recorded 240% development in the second quarter of 2022. Speaking of the same, Amanpreet Bajaj, Normal Supervisor for India, South East, Hong Kong and Taiwan, revealed, “We are seeing a fundamental shift in travel that creates tangible alternatives for communities off the beaten path. It is extremely exciting to see vacationers’ enthusiasm for exploring new places, in addition to the constructive financial influence they create on indigenous communities.Amanpreet Bajaj further added that the new shift in Indian travelers’ preferences in terms of non-urban destinations and off-beat locations allows people in these regions to diversify their revenue by hosting on Airbnb and building financial resilience.

Top Indian Cities for Long Term Stays

Apart from revealing Indian travellers’ preference for non-urban destinations and offbeat Indian locations, Airbnb also mentioned that key cities in India that have risen to the top on Airbnb India for long-term stays in the second quarter of 2022 were Arambol, Naggar, Kullu, Agonda and Almora. According to the study on Airbnb India, non-city nights booked for long-term stays (28 days and more) in India doubled in the assessment of the second quarter of 2019.
“Because the travel revolution continues to unfold, the benefits of tourism are spreading further across India and enabling locals to earn accommodation and make ends meet,” says Airbnb.
