Jay Carney, the Amazon.com Inc. executive who dramatically expanded his lobbying and public affairs operations after a stint as White House press secretary, joins Airbnb Inc as chief policy and communications, the home rental startup announced on Friday.

Carney, who worked at Amazon for seven years as the company’s senior vice president of global affairs, will start at Airbnb in September and report to co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky. He will be based in Washington.
