Lonely Planet unveiled its top destination to visit in 2023, with 30 must-see places around the world.
Drawing on insights from local experts at the heart of each destination, the Best in Travel report features cities, countries and regions to help travelers plan their next trip. Whether you fancy a faraway adventure or want something closer to home (Scotland also makes the list), there’s something in the roundup for everyone.
The research is divided into five sections – Eat, Journey, Unwind, Connect and Learn – with each location chosen for its timeliness, unique experiences, wow factor and ongoing commitment to sustainability, community and diversity.
In the Eat category, dining recommendations include Lima, the capital of Peru, affordable world-class restaurants in South Africa, and the rich food scene around Umbria, Italy. Meanwhile, the Learn category highlights the destinations of Manchester, the historic southern region of Scotland and the laid-back surf culture of El Salvador.
“2023 is shaping up to be the year to get out and explore. With much of the world firmly on the road to recovery, travelers are looking for different places and experiences,” said Lonely Planet’s Tom Hall.
“The list celebrates the world in all its wonderfully engaging variety. Each of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2023 itineraries demonstrates how to leave the crowds behind and truly capture the heart of a destination.”
