Long Island Bahamas beckons after
Holy Cow! It’s finally time. Now, after two years, we can pack our bags and take our travel shoes. It’s finally time to explore our world.
We are soon leaving to discover a somewhat remote island 80 miles long in the Bahamas.
My wife discovered an Airbnb cottage named Tiny’s Hurricane Hole – Palms Cottage. It is located directly on the water. Apparently you can walk for miles on the beaches and there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring.

This is our first international trek since COVID reared its ugly head and affected everyone and everything. In March 2020 we were heading to Israel when it all came to a halt. During this downtime, I survived COVID and a very difficult foot surgery.
Long COVIDs with joint and muscle pain are always a challenge. But that won’t stop me from exploring.
Now is the time to put all of that behind us as we head off to explore Long Island. It’s Long Island, Bahamas. A good description can be found in this excerpt from a Men’s Journal article by Matthew Jussim:
Often compared to a string of pearls, the Bahamas comprises more than 700 islands scattered over 160 square kilometers of ocean. So, yes, there is no shortage of stunning scenery with incredibly beautiful places to explore across the Bahamas. But if you’re looking for a truly low-key destination where you can truly get away from it all and enjoy some of the best beaches in the world, you can find it on Long Island.
Long Island is a stark contrast to major tourist destinations – like Nassau and Paradise Island – you get to see the Bahamas in a more raw and unadulterated form. It has beautiful oceans, sandy beaches, and plenty of activities that can take you over the water and through the island’s caves, cliffs, and beautiful monuments.
Reaching Long Island is not very easy. First, we land in Nassau, then take a small plane for the hour-long flight to Stella Maris Airport.
We are departing from an airport outside the city of Orlando. Indeed, flights from our hometown cost twice as much with limited arrival options. Luckily we found a hotel that offers park and fly so this is a great alternative.
So, now the type A personality starts to worry. I love people, and in this place people can be rare. We are also remote, so internet and phone service can be spotty. Will it be a chance to relax and enjoy being unplugged? Can I do this?
On the plus side, we love water.
The water is crystal clear, so it’s a great opportunity to explore the underwater part of our planet. This island is also home to one of the deepest saltwater blue holes in the world, located near the coast of Long Island. It is about 660 feet deep. A blue hole is an underwater cavern and sometimes also called a sinkhole. It’s supposed to be one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the world.
It is an incredible big planet, and we are honored to have the opportunity to explore its wonders.
If possible, while we’re at it, we’ll keep you posted on this “out of our box” trip.
I therefore invite you to take a member of your family or a friend and go out for a walk. Talk about your plans to explore new places in our world. It could even be near your neighborhood or backyard.
