Man who admitted firing a shotgun has been convicted

Dec 9 – A 37-year-old man accused of pulling out a shotgun during a confrontation outside a Whitefish-area bar last summer has been handed a three-year suspended sentence on December 1.

Aaron Douglas Glenn Kupka initially faced assault with a weapon charge after the July 9 incident, but prosecutors later changed it to criminal endangerment. In exchange, Kupka pleaded guilty to the latter crime in Flathead County District Court on October 19.

Speaking that day, Kupka acknowledged that the situation could have gotten out of hand. According to court documents, deputies from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office responded to the watering hole around 1:33 a.m. to report that a man was threatening to kill another individual.

Kupka, still there when deputies arrived, reportedly told authorities where to find the shotgun. They then located the firearm in a nearby van, according to court documents. During a subsequent search, deputies reportedly found eight shells in Kupka’s pocket.

During his December 1 sentencing, prosecutors recommended Kupka to Judge Amy Eddy, saying he took responsibility for his actions after the confrontation.

As part of the sentence, Eddy gave Kupka a three-day sentence.
