Memphis man asks for a ride, shoots driver and steals his car, police say

A man was taken into custody Thursday after allegedly shooting a driver who drove him moments earlier, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Court documents show Dontavius ​​Barron, 24, is charged with carjacking and attempted second-degree murder in the early hours of October 23 near Riverdale and Winchester roads.

A man told police that someone he only knew as “Tae” asked him to drive him to a relative’s home in East Memphis, court documents show. They had only known each other for about a month at the time.

As the driver arrived on Riverdale Road from Interstate 385, the passenger pulled out a gun and told the driver to pull over near a business, according to court documents.

The driver told police the passenger told him to get out of the car and sit on the ground, according to court documents.

According to court documents, the driver refused and began driving away with his car keys in hand. The passenger then fired a shot at the driver, who dropped the keys and continued running.

As he was leaving the scene, the man saw “Tae” drive off in his car, according to court documents.

Police later identified Barron as “Tae,” according to court documents. He was taken into custody on Thursday.
