Most advantageous European destinations in 2022

With inflation, bills and fuel prices all rising at astonishing rates around the world, many of us are feeling the pinch. And if you’re hoping to try and book a fall getaway despite all that, then cheaper destinations might seem much, much more appealing than usual.

Then check out this currency exchange study Postal travel moneywho examined travel expenses in 20 major European city-break destinations to discover. The report looked at a dozen factors, ranging from the cost of two nights’ hotel accommodation to attraction tickets and the price of local public transport.

We can reveal that the cheapest city to visit in Europe right now is… Athens! The total cost of a two-day trip to the Greek capital came to just £207 ($238) per person. Prices in Athens apparently fell 15% last year.

The next in the list has come Lisbonwhere a two-day trip costs just £218 ($251) right now, followed by Krakow in Poland (£219, $252). According to Post Office Travel Money, with Athens and Lisbon taking the lead, this is the first time in 15 years that Western European cities have been cheaper than their Eastern counterparts.

At the other end of the ranking, the most expensive cities were amsterdam and Venice. The average cost of two nights in ‘Dam was £593 ($682) – almost triple the cost in Athens – while in Venice it was £457 ($525).

It’s worth mentioning that the study doesn’t include the price to actually get to your city break destination – just how much you’ll spend during your stay.
