Most tickets were sold out for the Manchester City-Bayern Munich game at Lambeau Field; Green Bay area hotel rooms are in short supply
GREEN BAY – Eighty percent of tickets are sold out for the Manchester City-Bayern Munich football match at Lambeau Field.
The football friendly – an exhibition game – is scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 23 at the home of the Green Bay Packers. Tickets went on sale May 5 to Packers season ticket holders and May 6 to the general public.
The match pits two of the world’s football powerhouses, English Premier League side Manchester City and German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.
Bayern, founded in 1900, have just won their 32nd championship since the launch of the Bundesliga almost 59 years ago. This year was his 10th consecutive Bundesliga championship. He has also won six Champions League cups, among other achievements.
Since luring manager Pep Guardiola from Bayern in 2016, Man City, founded in 1880, have won three of the last four Premier League championships and are a point clear of Liverpool this season. Each team will play its last game of the season on Sunday.
Unsold seats in Lambeau are mostly found in the upper rows of the bowl in the north end zone and in the rows closest to the pitch.
Standard tickets cost between $35 and $160, but those closer to the field were much more expensive. These seats are in what Ticketmaster calls its official Platinum category. Ticketmaster said this category uses market-based pricing.
On Wednesday, the remaining official Platinum seats, some of which were directly behind the team benches, ranged from $170 to $950.
“The goal is to give the most passionate fans fair and secure access to the best tickets, while allowing artists and others involved in organizing live events to price tickets as close as possible to their true market value,” Ticketmaster explained on its website.
In the secondary market, the average of the cheapest tickets across six markets was $79.
As of Wednesday, Ticketmaster had not reported to Chicago event organizer Cardenas Marketing Network (CMN) how many tickets had been sold to overseas fans.

The weekend of the match will kick off a busy period in Green Bay. In the days following the July 23 game, the Packers will hold their annual shareholder meeting and open training camp for the 2022 season. The week-long EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh also begins this Monday. This event attracted more than 600,000 visitors in 2021, according to the EAA, the Packers’ training camp attracts around 90,000 fans from around the world.
And in downtown Green Bay, the annual rendezvous Kitsunekon Conventionan event for anime and game lovers, has claimed hotel rooms for this weekend.
“We’re pretty full this weekend,” said Brad Toll, president and CEO of Discover Green Bay. “We already had a lot of full houses downtown before football was announced. The impact of it is going to be felt throughout northeast Wisconsin, and potentially in Madison and Milwaukee.”
That is to say, hotel rooms are already expensive, with rooms, when you can find them, going for $300 a night and up. A random check of hotel websites showed that a number of them were unavailable for this weekend.
A check of Airbnb listings for this weekend showed 43 listings, some in the Appleton, that ranged from $115 to $1,905 a night. Toll said there are about 700 Airbnb providers in the area.
“It’s not unlike a Packers weekend,” he said.
