My Favorite Airbnb Experience: A Sicily Boat Trip to the Egadi Islands

For almost eight hours, my family – plus six other guests, with whom we quickly became friends – feasted in the sun and the sea, making stops along the coasts of two islands, Favignana and Levanzo. We stopped at cyan-colored bays, where we jumped into the water and watched silver fish swim through our snorkels (which were provided on board). We anchored next to an old tuff quarry on the southern cliffs of Favignana, where we swam to shore and passed through cool caves strewn with fossilized seashells. At lunchtime, we docked at the old tuna cannery in Favignana, where we had a few hours to explore ashore. Camparia.

In the afternoon we had the chance to swim in the caves of Levanzo, picking tiny molluscs known as patella from the rocks and putting their brackish interiors in our mouths (not everyone was not a fan, but it was fun to try). When we boarded after our fifth and final stop, our sunburns starting to tingle, the crew surprised us with Aperol spritzes (soda, beer and water were also included throughout the day).

The whole experience cost us less than $100 per person (prices change depending on the date and how many seats you book) – one flight, I thought, for such a full day of sailing. You could book the entire boat for around $1,400, but we were happy to share space with others; When you spend a week with the same people, especially with your family, it can be nice to mingle a little with others. Our fellow travelers, all from various parts of Europe, were such good company; we laughed at the jokes they had made the rest of the trip.

Are there other companies that offer similar Sicily boat trips in the area? Most definitely, you could probably show up and ask your hotel or Airbnb host to help you book one. You may be able to find seats for your whole group; you should not. You can also get any variable from the experience, for better or for worse. For us it was important to be able to book in advance, and Daniele and his team took great care of us. I don’t think it could have been better timed.
