Palmer, Massachusetts is a railroad town with an Airbnb caboose

A year ago, we told you about a caboose from 1919 in the small town of Chester, Massachusetts that you can rent for the night. However, we have just found another one that you can hire which is part of a much bigger experience for train lovers in the town of Palmer – and it’s about an hour further from the south coast .

“Palmer is a railroad town,” says the Steaming Tender restaurant website, noting that at one time it was known as “The City of the Seven Railroads”. These days there are four railroads running through Palmer, freight lines running right past the restaurant. In fact, the restaurant itself is in a 19th century train station with a number of trains on display around it, including a steam engine.

As part of the many train cars on the property, restorer Robin Lamothe has also refurbished a 1947 Bangor Aroostook tail truck which you can rent through Airbnb. The Bangor and Aroostook line operated from 1891 to 2003.

Lamothe also operates the Trainmaster’s Inna five-room bed and breakfast within walking distance of the restaurant, but most railroad enthusiasts would probably prefer to stay in the caboose berths rather than the hostel beds every day.

Shops around the Steaming Tender are also worth a visit, such as Freight House Supply, Box Car Bargains and Trains & Toys. There are also antique shops and other stores around this quaint little town center that feels like stepping back in time to when the railroad was king.

There is even the Pease Historical Instrument Collectionwhere you can see a number of freestanding pianos and organs as well as many other instruments from the past.

Take a look at some of the photos from inside the caboose and see if you’d like to take the train fan in your life for the ultimate weekend on the railroads.
