Runner collapses and dies after Brooklyn Half Marathon

NEW YORK (AP) — A 30-year-old man crossing the finish line of a Brooklyn half-marathon collapsed and died Saturday morning, officials said in New York.

The runner was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, fire department spokesman Frank Dwyer said.

It’s unclear what caused the runner’s collapse, although a statement from the nonprofit New York Road Runners said it happened after the man completed the RBC Brooklyn Half 2022.

“Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the rider’s family and loved ones,” spokeswoman Trina Singian said.

Singian said medical personnel were placed from start to finish throughout the race. The group also monitored weather conditions leading up to and during the race with city agency officials and weather experts. Singian said the temperature ranged from low 60s to high 70s during the race, which started at 7 a.m.

A heat advisory warning that hot temperatures and high humidity could trigger heat-related illnesses was in effect across New York City until 8 p.m. Saturday. Temperatures topped 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.7 degrees Celsius) midday in Brooklyn.

More than 22,000 runners were scheduled to run from Prospect Park to the Coney Island boardwalk in Saturday’s half marathon, which returned to full capacity for the first time in three years.

Dwyer said six other runners were taken to hospital on Saturday morning. Three had serious, non-life-threatening injuries, while the other three had minor injuries.
