See inside a ‘living’ Scottish hobbit hideaway

Step into a storybook in this enchanting short term rental.

Nestled in the rural foothills of the Ben Rinnes mountain in northern Scotland, this little Airbnb offers to transport visitors off the grid and into a fairy tale.

The Bilbo Baggins-worthy hobbit hideaway offers guests a charming retreat in a wooded, round “home of life” of a dwelling set on lush grounds. Both bedrooms and a bathroom have mountain views from every window, with additional sunshine via a skylight in the living room. An additional set of bunk beds and convertible futons brings the “Earthen house” to five beds and can accommodate up to six people at a time. Pets are welcome.

The 3-acre lot features a babbling brook, mini waterfalls, the “Fairy Glen”, a private garden, outdoor games, picnic tables, pizza oven, grill and access to a larger garden – which includes a fire pit, swings and a “sensory play den”, according to the Airbnb Listing.

“It is truly unique, magical and architecturally designed to provide a fun and challenging escape from the pressures of everyday life. Compared to a giant hug,” boasted the quirky abode’s bio.

Beyond the twee aspect, the address also offers a real escape from the over-connected world for anyone who wants to get away from technology.

“For indoor entertainment we have provided free unlimited wifi, a bluetooth speaker and a wide selection of books, games, puzzles and stuffed animals and wooden toys including a train and giant jenga . If you want a tech-free break, just turn wifi off or ask us to remove it,” the host explained in the listing.

Those off the grid during their stay might instead enjoy star-scrolling with the house’s Dobsonian telescope. Wildlife can also be frequently spotted while roaming the property, as are the three resident ducks and community of free-range chickens.

The price for three nights (the minimum for a visit) at Earthen Homes ranges depending on the season, and starts at $181 a night.
