The Best (and Worst) Mighty Swell Spiked Seltzers

Mighty Swell Spiked Seltzer

The swell is more powerful

Remember when there were only two or three brands of hard seltzer? I hardly do any more. When it became clear that you could produce easy-to-drink gluten-free beverages made with natural flavors and only 100 calories, the competition opened wide. Based in Austin, TX, Mighty Swell Spiked Seltzer features cold infused sugar alcohol and hit the scene hard with 12 flavors (with more in the works). I decided to grab two Mighty Swell seltzer variety packs — Classic and Tropic, each containing four distinct flavors — and ranked them. I got you.

Best: Blackberry

I’m not convinced it looks like a blackberry, but that’s where my problems end. Like almost all Mighty Swell hard seltzers, the fruity and sweet flavors only enhance the experience. I’m really impressed. It’s light, it’s clean, and it’s unnervingly easy to finish one before you know it.

2. Lime Cherry

It’s weird how much Mighty Swell seltzer reminds me of club soda, but it lacks all the syrupy sweetness that soda is known for. It’s not far from a cherry lime rickey. Just, you know, for adults.

3. Watermelon Mint

I unintentionally said “yum” out loud when I tasted this, and since I’m not a cartoon character, it’s not something that happens very often. Although the base of the drink starts out with natural white grape juice for some reason, the watermelon and mint flavors come on instantly, bright and fresh. It’s like a tasty and not so sweet mojito.

4. Grapefruit

It tastes exactly like a Fresca. If you are my grandfather, you will love this. If you’re looking for a sweeter grapefruit flavor, you might want to skip this. What can I say, I’m my grandfather’s grandson.

5. Raspberry Mango

We’re dealing with a lot more mango than raspberry here, but for some reason I really don’t mind. This is one of the best mango flavors of any seltzer I’ve tried to date; soft and not overwhelming. Despite a non-existent raspberry element, I really like this.

6. Blood Orange

This is a pretty solid blood orange. It’s tart and not overly bitter, but it’s one of the only Mighty Swell seltzer products where you can really feel the weight of the alcohol content. It has a heaviness that I don’t mind, but it’s harder to fly through a few blood orange boxes than the other flavors.

7. Fishing

This type is quite sweet and really doesn’t taste too different from a gummy peach ring. Is this your vibe? This is not mine. The flavor really isn’t that bad, but I don’t think I can handle more than one.

8. Pineapple

Hoooooooooooly smoke is bad. I screamed out loud when I took a sip of this. The whole flavor profile going on here feels, smells and tastes like it’s gone bad. This is a huge surprise to me, based on Mighty Swell’s otherwise very strong performance. I would avoid putting that drink near your face for the rest of your life.
