The largest residential house in the country is here in New York

How much living space does a person really need? Obviously, we can only respond on a case-by-case basis. A childless newlywed couple probably needs a lot less space than, say, the Kardashian clan.

But the fact is that the average size of a newly built home in the United States has increased over the years. In 1945, the square footage was around 800. In 2020, it was nearly 2,500, more than triple the size.

The cost of materials and the ease of getting big lines of credit are just a few of the reasons Americans are building bigger.

So what is the largest single-family home in New York? It also happens to be the largest in the whole country.

Located in the Hamptons on Long Island, the Fair Field mansion was built in 2003 and boasts approximately 110,000 square feet of floor space, making it the largest single-family residence in the United States. By comparing, the White House is “only” 54,900 square feet.

The estimated value of the mansion is between $267 million and $500 million. It is owned by 88-year-old billionaire businessman Ira Rennert, who began his successful Wall Street career in the mid-1950s. He is one of the wealthiest individuals in New York State. , with a net worth of around $3.5 billion.

Along with 21 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms, the mansion would include a 164-seat theater, a garage that could hold about 100 cars, and a private museum showcasing Rennert’s $500 million art collection. There are three on-site pools, an enormous $150,000 hot tub, a bowling alley, and a helipad for Rennert’s private helicopter. The mansion sits on 63 acres.

Unfortunately, few photos exist for the public of the interior of this massive house. But based on aerial shots of the resort, one can only imagine the amount of glitz inside.

So what do you think — would you live in a 110,000 square foot house? Or would you get lost in it?
