The most affordable US and Canadian cities for long-term stays on Airbnb

The demand for travel is increasing after two years at home, and people are staying away more and more. Many people who left the office to work from home during the pandemic have never stopped, and a mixed work and travel lifestyle is becoming more common. Airbnb to analyse in the United States and Canada which had booked at least 1,000 long-term stays during the first quarter of the year. Using the data, they found the five most affordable cities in the United States and Canada based on average overnight prices.

The Most Affordable American Cities

1) Tulalip, Washington

  • Average price: $16.9 per night
  • About the region: Tulalip is about 1 hour north of Seattle by car and is home to the Tulalip Tribe. It sits in a bay in the state’s Puget Sound, which connects to the Pacific Ocean.

2) Catlett, Virginia

  • Average price: $21.8 per night
  • About the region: Catlett is just over an hour west of Washington D.C. and is a very small community of just 331 people, according to the 2020 census.

3) Garretson, South Dakota

  • Average price: $24.3 per night
  • About the region: Garretson is on the border of South Dakota and Minnesota and about a 3.5 hour drive from Minneapolis. It’s about 30 minutes from Sioux Fallsa popular destination for climbers and skiers.

4) Lamberton, Minn.

  • Average price: $24.4 per night
  • About the region: Lamberton is about a 2.5 hour drive east of Minneapolis and 2 hours from Sioux Falls.

5) Angleton, Texas

  • About the region: Angleton is about an hour south of downtown Houston and 10 minutes from Mammoth Lake Water Parkthe largest scuba diving lake in the country.

The most affordable Canadian cities

1) Trois-Rivieres, Quebec

  • Average price: $35.6 per night
  • About the region: Trois-Rivières sits between Quebec and Montreal along the St. Lawrence River and is just under a two-hour drive from each depending on traffic. Interesting historical sites such as The Old Prison of Trois-Rivières Where Forges of Saint-Maurice are popular attractions in the area.

2) Medicine Hat, Alta.

  • Average price: $41.3 per night
  • About the region: Medicine Hat is about 3 hours southeast of Calgary by car and is one of the sunniest cities in Canada. There is an average of 330 sunny days a year. It is also home to the tallest tipi in the world, the Saamis Tipi.

3) Gatineau, Quebec

4) Thorold, Ont.

  • About the region: Thorold is about 15 minutes west of Niagara Falls by car. This is a great place to set up a base camp for those interested in the falls and the surrounding area.

5) Quebec, Quebec

  • About the region: Quebec City is home to approximately half a million French-speaking Canadians and the beautiful Chateau Frontenacthe city’s most famous monument.

As the pandemic slowly fades into history, travelers are more eager than ever to get back to exploring, and for longer. It’s part of what has led to so many long-term stays on Airbnb, but there’s also a growing movement to mix work and travel. Being a digital nomad is a lifestyle enjoyed by many who can get their work done from anywhere, and affordable housing is a necessity when you’re not calling a particular area home for good.

While some of the affordable Airbnb cities on the above list aren’t filled with amenities and attractions to explore, for some that’s the point. Getting away from it all while keeping costs low is a goal shared by many travelers this year. Airbnb data shows that people are looking for ways to stay longer for less, and the cities above are great examples of where that can be done.
