U.S. to expand and extend temporary status for Haitians

On Monday, the Biden administration confirmed that it would extend the Haitians’ temporary status for another 18 months. With this update, the program will now expire on August 3, 2024.

Given the “extraordinary and temporary conditions” that currently exist in Haiti, the US government has decided to extend the temporary status of Haitians. The Department of Homeland Security extended the temporary status of several countries, including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Myanmar, Cameroon and Ukraine.

Conditions in Haiti have led many people to flee the country for countries like South America, Mexico and the United States The U.S. government expelled many Haitians from their homes after an estimated 16,000 mostly Haitian migrants camped in the small Texas border town of Del Rio in September 2021.

Mayorkas also announced that “we are already providing much-needed humanitarian assistance to Haitian citizens in the United States.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed that more than 100,000 Haitians will be eligible for temporary status as part of Monday’s announcement.

Haitians entering the United States after Monday’s announcement will not be eligible for Temporary Protected Status.
