1. Rain prompts warning against swimming in the ocean

With rain falling on the Southland, Los Angeles County health officials issued their standard warning for people to avoid entering seawater near storm drains or rivers due to a possible bacterial infection.

The county’s public health department has issued a seawater quality rainfall advisory that will be in effect until at least 4:30 p.m. Friday. With more rain in the forecast this week, the advisory could be extended.

Health officials have noted that runoff that reaches the ocean can carry bacteria, chemicals, debris and other health risks. People who come into contact with contaminated water in the ocean could get sick, health officials said.

Information on beach conditions is available online at publichealth.lacounty.gov/beach/ or by calling 800-525-5662.

A ‘celebration of life’ for Southland’s famous mountain lion P-22 will take place at the Greek Theater next month, honoring the cat who made Griffith Park his home and became the face of the people of Southern California endangered lions.

The free event is scheduled for noon on February 4, according to the theater’s website. Tickets will be required, but distribution details have yet to be announced.

The lion was euthanized on December 17 after being examined by wildlife officers who captured the cat following recent signs of distress, including a series of attacks on pet dogs in the area.
