Who should become the next prime minister?

Boris Johnson gave his final speech in Parliament last month and now we have the two candidates vying to replace him.

Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak will become the next prime minister after Tory MPs place them in the final round of the Tory leadership election. Now power is flowing out of Westminster and into the hands of Conservative Party members.

Members of the Conservative Party – those who sign up by paying up to £25 a year – are now being asked to vote for their favorite candidate to lead the party and become the next Prime Minister. Current membership size is unknown, but insiders expect it to have grown from the roughly 160,000 it had in the 2019 leadership election – reports the AP.

Liz Truss and Sunak have participated in televised debates. They also hit the road to take part in 12 party-organized hustings across the UK.

Conservative Party members are expected to receive mail-in ballots by August 5, then will have up to a month to decide before polls close at 5 p.m. on September 2. The next leader of the Conservative Party – and of the UK – will be announced on September 5.

Boris Johnson will officially submit his resignation to the Queen the next day before his successor takes over in Downing Street.
