Jesse Lingard says he drank alcohol to ‘ease pain’ during final days at ‘obsolete’ United

Jesse Lingard booze United so far behind on everything

Jesse Lingard gave a revealing interview about Stephen Bartlett Diary of a CEO podcast, discussing his struggles with depression, alcohol, disgrace at Manchester United and more.

Speaking on the popular podcast series earlier this week, the former United The academy player opened up about how the final days of his boyhood club unfolded, highlighting not only his own personal struggles but also the decisions made behind the scenes by superiors who only did hamper things even more.

Lingard spent 22 years at the club and broke into the first team in the 2015/16 season under Louis van Gaal, scoring winning goals in both FA Cup final and Community Shield and become a trusted first-team regular under multiple managers.

However, the Warrington-the born midfielder fell out of the squad in 2019 and managed just four starts in 22 appearances in his final season under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick. As he explained to Bartlett, there was more to it than just a lack of playing time behind the scenes.

One of the first things he covered in the long and extremely honest chat was how things got so sour at United that he started drinking and taking ‘nightcaps’ as a means of “trying to relieve the pain”.

Not only has he stopped getting playing time at Old Trafford, but despite looking like a rejuvenated and crucially happy character while spending half a season on loan at West Ham in 2021 – bagging nine goals and five assists in 19 games – he also had a transfer blocked by the club in January 2022.

As reported at the timealthough United decided to keep him as a player in the squad, newly bought Newcastle were also said to be in for the 30-year-old after his resurgence in London, but the board ultimately decided to block the move.

It was later reported that Jesse requested days off which he publicly denied at the time and went on to reiterate to Bartlett that it was a fabrication by then-newly appointed Director of Football John Murtough and made public by Rangnick. Always two versions of every story.

To make matters worse, it’s not like anyone could blame Lingard for asking for time off even though he did; in addition to the horrific levels of abuse he suffered from his own club’s fans, he also struggled with many personal issues.

In addition to his grandfather struggling with prostate cancer (a character that has always played a key role in his life), he also had to deal with his mother’s struggles with depressionwhich got so bad she was admitted to the hospital in 2019, leaving Jesse to care for younger siblings Jasper and Daisy-Boo.

“The depression was so bad she couldn’t really cope and she needed to get out and get help,” he told Bartlett. “My little sister who was 11 at the time, and my little brother who was 15, for me, I was always going through my own stuff too. So I wasn’t really the big brother they wanted at the time. era.

He confessed: “I just wasn’t there mentally” and noted that he received support from Solskjær during the difficult period. Despite wanting to come back and play football for so long, he said he “didn’t want to be on the pitch anymore” and needed a break from the spotlight.

It is deeply saddening to learn that the faithful servant of the United States and England international was subjected to such poor treatment by his own club’s fans while all of this was going on. More importantly, it’s an important reminder that abuse of any kind, online or otherwise, is simply not allowed.

Thankfully, once again enjoying his football at Nottingham Forest, Lingard then attempted to explain the various issues surrounding his former club. To put it simply, he said they’re “so behind on everything” whether it’s training facilities, recruiting or even social media.

Many noted that these comments echo complaints made by Cristiano Ronaldo in his unrestrained interview shortly before he was released from the club as well, although we’re sure most Reds would agree – that was more the way he went about it.
