Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Multiple-alarm blaze in Hyde Park draws 250 firefighters, leaves one in critical condition. Several emergency crews responded to a fire in a four-story building at 5130 South Kenwood Ave. around 3:30 a.m. “Palisade conditions” on the second floor were an obstacle for firefighters as they entered the building. An elderly woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The fire was escalated to a multi-alarm fire due to the intensity of the fire.

2) Community activist Ja’Mal Green earns the top spot on the ballot for Chicago’s mayoral election. The placement lottery took place yesterday. Community activist and entrepreneur Ja’Mal Green will be the first name listed, followed by Sophia King, Kam Buckner, Willie Wilson, Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas. Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who skipped the lottery, will be seeded seventh, followed by Frederick Collins, John LoGalpo, Roderick Sawyer and Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia. The election is February 28.

3) The Chess Tournament combines students and cops in a safe space that allows children to “flex their brain muscles”. Now in its seventh year, the Cops & Kids Invitational Chess Tournament kicked off at the Guaranteed Rate Field yesterday. About 120 students from 10 Chicago public schools participated in the event. The objective of this program is to give students the opportunity to communicate with the police in a relaxed environment. A closing tournament will take place later in the school year.

Chicago Sun-Times

4) Former Bears player on team bringing hotel, shops, apartments to historic Motor Row building. Former Bears defensive end Israel Idonjie and a team of investors purchased the building in 2018. The iconic Hudson Motor Building’s four-story, 38-unit complex received approval of key city zoning in mid-November, but the proposed redesign awaits a city council vote. The development is part of efforts to revitalize Motor Row, which was designated a Chicago Landmark District in 2000.

5) Airbnb is launching a Chicago restaurant guide, highlighting several neighborhoods. The restaurant guide features 27 places to eat in six Chicago neighborhoods: Andersonville, Logan Square, Pilsen, Chinatown, Bronzeville and Hyde Park. Restaurants, brasseries, bistros and bakeries are represented. Airbnb hosts, the Illinois Restaurant Association and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to compile the list.
