Milan landfill closed due to fire

MILAN, Tenn. — The Milan city landfill is closed until further notice due to a fire.

Around noon Thursday, Milan firefighters were dispatched to the landfill after workers were unable to control a blaze.

“There was a fire here for a few days, and they were unable to get it under control. And so we got the call here earlier this morning to get out and now we’ve started operations,” Milan Fire Chief Steven Dillard said.

Visually, the fire is not great. However, it is spread over three to four acres of land.

The fire is actually under the debris, making it difficult for crews to bring the fire under control.

Along with Milan, Dyerburg, Gibson County and Madison County Fire Departments were on the scene, working together to control and attempt to extinguish the blaze.

With the fire covering such a large area, firefighters have to use more than water.

“F-500 foam. We’re going to use an excavator to help move this around so we can get down to the sea of fire. And also ultimately the way we’re going to present this is we’re going to cover it up of land. And so all of these operations are going together right now,” Dillard said.

Dillard says it could take at least 12 to 24 hours to extinguish the fire. But he says it could take more and it could take less.

“Just know that we are doing everything we can to protect our city. We work as fast as possible. I know the smoke is a nuisance, but please bear with us,” Dillard said.

He says they will swap men periodically and use several means to keep firefighters cool.
