Kent plane crash: AAIB probe after plane crashes in woods near Rochester airport | United Kingdom | New

Eyewitnesses say the plane took off from Rochester Airport in Kent before crashing into nearby woods. An urgent investigation has been launched by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) as no planes enter or leave the airport. Emergency services also remain on site.

Kent Police confirmed two people were “inside the plane”, but said no injuries were reported.

Kent Fire and Rescue confirmed they were at the scene of the crash.

A Rochester Airport spokesperson said a “recovery situation” was currently unfolding away from the airfield.

The spokesperson said: “I can confirm that there has been an incident and is ongoing at this time. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has been notified.

“In fact, nothing takes off at the moment because there is a recovery situation outside the airfield

“I can’t say anything more because it’s part of the investigation.”

A Kent Police spokesman confirmed two people were “inside the plane”.

They said: “We were called at 11.01am on Monday 31st October 2022 to reports of a collision with a light aircraft in Common Road, Chatham. The aircraft is believed to have come to rest in a wooded area.

“Officers are at the scene with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service. Two people are believed to be inside the plane. Emergency services are working together to ensure that those inside the aircraft are brought to safety No injuries are feared to have been reported.

“Common Road is currently closed while the incident is dealt with.”

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We are currently at the scene of a light aircraft crash on Common Road in Chatham.

“Two fire engines, an off-road unit and the KFRS Technical Rescue Team were dispatched to the scene.

“Crews are working alongside partner agencies to rescue two people from the plane.”

The AAIB investigates civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents in the UK.

It can also provide assistance and expertise to international air accident investigations and organizations.

Rochester Airport is just outside of Rochester, Medway and facilitates public flying and provides pilots with a place to learn to fly.
