The perfect 1870s chalet for relocation has already moved twice
Relocation of older homes has become more common in recent years as people seek affordable and sustainable housing solutions – and this is likely to increase with Clarke Gayford’s new project. Moving house series starting next Tuesday.
But moving houses is nothing new. Here is a very pretty 142 year old chalet that has already been moved twice and needs to be moved a third time – and it’s probably small enough to fit on a single truck.
Woodlands Cottage, built in 1879, began life on a farm in Wairarapapa. It has been moved to the road twice and is now on a farm 12 miles from Masterton, where it is currently used to provide airbnb accommodation.
Listing agent Anneka Billing of Property Brokers Masterton said the two-story, three-bedroom cottage originally housed 14 people – it was owned by Henry James and Isobel (née McKenzie) and their 12 children.

“It was built with native New Zealand timbers and has been thoughtfully updated that retains the original features and character with the practicality of the spaces you need to live today.”
Billing says the hard work has been done, with new wiring throughout, new wall liners, and a cozy freestanding log fire.
Other special features include an open-plan living room, polished native woodwork, upstairs gabled bedrooms, a spacious bathroom with a cast-iron clawfoot tub, and front and rear verandas.
Billing says the chalet has just been listed and is already generating a lot of interest. “People have different ideas about what they would like to do with it. A person would like to bring it to the city.
“It is very difficult to know what price this could bring. We must assess the price by the feedback we receive. These kinds of houses are a very emotional thing. It depends on how much people value it.
The house is put up for sale by tender, with bids closing on October 27, 2021.
