We spotted a creepy spy camera in our Airbnb after having sex on the sofa – it ruined our holiday, say a British couple

A BRIT couple have described their horror after spotting a spy camera in their Airbnb home – just after frolicking on the sofa.

The couple, who run and run motorhome rental company Sunshine Campers, were driving through the north Spain when they decided to book the small villa in Zaralejo, about 25 miles northwest of Madrid.

Photos on popular short-term vacation rental website Airbnb showed a clean and pretty house surrounded by beautiful gardens, ideally located as a base during their visit to the Spanish capital.

But when they arrived they found the property was far from what they expected.

The house was filthy and dilapidated, the garden was overgrown and neglected, and the couple were forced to spend the first hour of their stay cleaning up dead flies.

But what horrified the Kennedys the most was what they discovered hidden on the wall, after enjoying an impromptu moment. sex sitting on the sofa bed in the living room.

Mounted near the top of the wall, disguised to look like a motion sensor or air freshener, was a small white camera.

As Mike, 55, said The Sun onlinethey had already had a horrible experience at the property, and finding the hidden camera was “icing on the cake”.

He said: “When we got there, the place was tough, but we had nowhere to go.

“It was an asshole, miles from how it was portrayed in the photos, and at £130 a night it wasn’t exactly cheap.”

In addition to dealing with dead flies and “trash piles” on the property, the Kennedys also had a miserable night’s sleep after an “industrial pump” in the bathroom started at 11 p.m. and continued all night.

“When we were packing the next morning, I noticed the camera on the living room wall, pointing directly at the living room.

“It was small enough that you thought it was a motion sensor, it looked like a phone camera.”

The invasion of privacy was made even worse when he realized that “where we had sex was directly in front of the camera”.

Although they had booked the property for three nights, they left the first morning after discovering the camera.

Mike complained to the owner, Luis, the next morning and said they were leaving early.

But rather than apologizing, he told Mike he had to expect flies and ants because the house was “out in the country”.

Mike continued: “We contacted him the morning we were leaving. He said the place was in the countryside and flies were to be expected. We haven’t heard from him since. “

He said he didn’t bring up the camera with Luis because he didn’t want to imply he saw it.

But he included it in his complaint to Airbnb.

Describing the customer service he received as “shocking”, he said he was initially told by a call service employee that Airbnb hosts were allowed to have cameras for “security reasons”.

They then offered him a 50% refund and closed the case until he persisted with them.

He has since received a full refund, while the company has also offered to reimburse all of the Kennedys’ additional expenses.

“It ruined my vacation,” he said. “It was a traumatic experience.

“I told them this property shouldn’t be listed, it’s so run down. It needs a complete overhaul, it looks disgusting.”

There wasn’t even a kettle or toaster, meaning the couple were forced to return to their campervan for breakfast.

What made the experience all the more shocking was that the previous Airbnb properties they had stayed at had all been top notch.

“I have stayed in Airbnbs all over the world and this is the first bad experience I have ever had. The only reason we even stayed one night was that we had been driving all day in the motorhome and that we were exhausted.

“Otherwise we would have turned around and gone where we were.”

Mike and Michaela, 57, then drove to a hotel they described as ‘pristine’, in a better location and, at just 128 euros (£110) a night, was cheaper than the Airbnb .

An Airbnb spokesperson told The Sun Online: “We have suspended this host while we investigate and provide the guest with our full support. We are enforcing strict rules on check-in devices and taking action on rare issues brought to our attention.”

The company says that while surveillance devices are allowed in common areas like this, hosts must fully disclose any security cameras or other property surveillance equipment in their listing.

Devices are not allowed to be concealed and are also prohibited in private spaces such as bathrooms, bedrooms or other sleeping areas.

The company has also launched a law enforcement portal and 24 hour security line for guests and hosts for any crises that arise during a stay.

Over a billion check-ins have been made on Airbnb to date, and less than 0.1% of bookings result in a safety report.
