ALTAY SK revealed that it attempted to offer the latest Saints sign a new contract with Mateusz Lis – with the departure of the Polish shot-stopper which is expected to cost the Turkish club money.
The Saints moved on to complete their second signing of the summer window yesterday, with Lis, 25, arriving on a free transfer subject to work permit approval.
Lis only became available thanks to his contract being torn up after the now-relegated Turkish Super Lig club failed to make payments to the goalkeeper.
A reshuffle at Altay’s boardroom, saving the club’s future, saw the new management offer Lis a new contract, but this was rejected by former youngster Lech Poznan.
While Lis stayed on for a further two weeks unpaid, he left in early May, allowing him to join Saints this summer, despite signing a four-year contract with Altay in 2021.
The Izmir-based club already owe Lis’ former side Wisla Krakow €600,000 but they could lose more money, depending on his contract with the Saints.
Indeed, Altay is still liable for Lis’ unpaid wages, with three years of her contract actually having to be paid.
However, as he has found a new club, Altay will only have to pay the Pole if the money he receives from Saints is less than the salary he would have earned at Altay.
Any difference in salary should be borne by Altay.
The club revealed that the goalkeeper earns around €8,750 a week, with the total salary for the remainder of his four-year contract standing at €1,350,000.
Already owed €175,000 in unpaid wages, Lis could potentially be awarded additional compensation after a dispute.
A statement from Altay read: “It was necessary to inform the public and our community about our former player, Mateusz Lis, who was announced as a free transfer by Southampton CF.
“On April 1, 2022, the player sent a formal notice to our club for his outstanding payments of €175,000.
“Given that the player’s payments were only made on April 15, 2022, the player was entitled to be released from that date.
“The player remained with our club until April 30 in good faith, but after that date he left our country and sent the notice of termination to our club dated May 3, 2022.
“Various offers made by our management, which took office on May 20, 2022, such as the renewal of the contract by paying the player’s claims and a sharing of a transfer fee in the event of a sale, have not been honored by the player. , the player’s manager (agent) and lawyer.
“In this context, the unpaid transfer fee of €600,000 to the Wisla Krakow club is included in our club’s accounts; €175,000 unpaid and owed to the player, which could also be increased by litigation.
“According to the annual fee he will sign with Southampton FC, the difference between these two fees is recorded as a debt – if the fee he will receive from Southampton FC is less than this fee, the €1,350,000 fee arising from his three-year contract, i.e. €450,000 per year.
