‘Airbnb era is over’: TikToker slams Airbnb hosts ‘destroying’ service, goes viral with nearly 1 million views

Each Internet service, like any phenomenon in this life, has its own evolution, when the initial positioning collides with the ruthless laws of the market – then the adjustment to the new reality takes place. It happened with Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, and it happened with Airbnb.

Long ago, in the late 2000s and early 10s, the service was designed as a low-cost alternative to hotels, as well as an opportunity for guests who got a free room to earn money. and meet new friends from all over the world. . Now it’s a huge international business, and the old romance seems to have gone with the wind.

A TikToker, which bears the nickname @mrchrischill for finance, news, and travel, recently made a video sharing the results of his extensive research on Airbnb mechanics and policies. According to Chris, he understood the essence of the service’s main problem. The video has gone viral, gaining nearly a million views to date.

As the original poster rightly points out, the initial essence of Airbnb was in its name, i.e. bed and breakfast. That is, anyone who had free space in their house or apartment could earn a little extra money on the side.

Airbnb’s original concept was hidden directly in the words “bed and breakfast” in its title

On the other hand, tourists who did not have enough money for a hotel could spend the night and have breakfast in a new place for a relatively small amount, having a unique new experience. Now, according to Chris, Airbnb no longer offers anything like that.

The OP and his team spent several months investigating Airbnb’s business model, finances and philosophy

According to the OP, he and a whole group of eager researchers spent several months studying Airbnb’s business model, finances, and philosophy. The results are not encouraging – instead of grandmothers renting out their son’s room after he gets married and leaves, development companies are now managing everything. They specially build entire apartment buildings and then just rent most of them on Airbnb.

Now Airbnb is literally a hotel company but without hotel service

It turns out that this is a full-fledged hotel business, but without hotel service, because development companies of course do not have specific experience in this area. However, these hosts are now encouraged by Airbnb’s “growth first” philosophy.

Thus, the company has a large number of hosts, but cannot fully and efficiently manage them. According to Chris, this makes him very sad, because the initial concept of Airbnb was extremely cool, so it’s a shame that over the years it has changed more and more.

The OP thinks business leaders have destroyed his huge potential, but he wants to make Airbnb great again

The OP notes that he and his team were driven, first of all, by a desire to figure it all out, to bring Airbnb back to the previous concept, so he would gladly share all of his findings with company representatives. Chris thinks Airbnb initially had great potential, but eventually destroyed it, and now management doesn’t know how to handle it all.

People in the comments confirmed almost every word the OP said

Most of the commenters on the video fully agreed with Chris, confirming that the service has largely destroyed the housing market, and now everyone is just trying to earn passive income with Airbnb. Previously, as they say, the cost per night was really low, but now it is almost on par with hotels.

As some people have sadly pointed out, Airbnb is now just a hotel company without customer service. And don’t forget the outrageous $200 cleaning fee — and the host also expects you to do a few chores before you leave. Of course, there are still quite a few ordinary people on the service who rent out their free rooms, but now it’s more of a minority.
