CT driver faces speeding and stolen car charges

A six-week investigation by state police has led to multiple charges against a Connecticut man accused of stealing a car and driving 127 mph on Interstate 93.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2022, a soldier monitoring traffic on the north side of the Interstate in Tilton saw a driver in a BMW 330xi pass it at 101 mph. The soldier began following the vehicle and clocked the driver at 127 mph. The policeman tried to stop the car, but it refused to stop, Lagacé said.

“A motor vehicle chase ensued on Interstate 93 via Sanbornton, Meredith, New Hampton and Plymouth,” she said. “The vehicle was traveling at excessive speeds, exhibiting lane control issues and turning off its headlights while driving in an attempt to evade police.”

A Troop F soldier was able to deploy a tire deflation device and the car pulled off the motorway in Plymouth. Troopers found the vehicle on the Tenney Mountain Highway shortly thereafter, unoccupied.

State police continued to investigate the case and a suspect, Benjamin Saxon, 22, of East Hartford, CT, has been identified. He was accused of using the Turo phone app, an AirBNB-like app for vehicles, to rent the car.

Saxon was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of reckless driving – deadly weapon, unauthorized use – rental property – $1,500+, and tampering with physical evidence, all felonies, as well as reckless operation and two charges of disobeying an officer and operating without lights violation. He was released on recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Belknap County Superior Court on February 16.
