KQ, as the airline is known by its international code, will operate Wednesday and Sunday using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner which has 30 seats in business class and 204 in economy class.

The flight will depart from Milan Malpensa airport at 5:20 p.m. arriving in Rome-Fiumicino at 6:45 p.m. The flight will then depart Rome at 8:05 p.m. arriving in Nairobi at 5:15 a.m.

The return from Nairobi is at 10:00 a.m. with an arrival at Milan-Malpensa at 4:00 p.m.

“Kenya Airways operates direct flights to Europe; Amsterdam, London and Paris and from June 8, 2022 will resume service from Rome-Fiumicino to Nairobi as well as the launch of the new route from Milano Malpensa to Nairobi,” KQ said in a statement.

The expansion of the airline’s routes comes as the aviation sector slowly recovers from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, including travel restrictions and reduced household and business incomes.

KQ, which has continued to report losses over the years, relies on government bailouts to maintain operations spanning domestic, regional and international flights.

Last year, KQ extended its codeshare agreement with Rome-based airline Alitalia, creating additional connectivity to both carriers’ networks by allowing customers to fly seamlessly to their destinations.

Codeshare flights offer tourists and business travelers additional travel options and better flight times when traveling between African points to Europe, the Far East and South America via the hubs of both airlines in Rome and Nairobi.

KQ reintroduced flights to Rome in 2019 after a seven-year hiatus, banking on increased traffic between the two continents and a new route to Geneva to boost revenue.

While Rome, with its “world city” status, has a rich history and culture, making it one of the top tourist destinations, Geneva hosts the largest number of international agencies such as the United Nations.
