Birmingham Charter overcame a two-point deficit to beat Chatsworth 8-2 on Friday at home.
Vince Cervantes hit a two RBI single to give the Patriots a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. After a wild pitch sent Cervantes home from third to make it 4-2, Robert Pitts then hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to put the game away.
As of now, Friday’s victory makes Birmingham 1-1 in the West Valley League following a 3-0 loss to Chatsworth on Tuesday. But Tuesday’s game was played in protest after Birmingham manager Matt Mowry asked the referee to check for an illegal bat from a Chatsworth player. The batter hit the ball to the shortstop, who made an error that allowed the batter to reach first base safely and score a run to make it 2-0 with one out and the loaded goals.
The umpire checked the bat and ruled it illegal for too much pine tar, but did not call the batter.
“It was huge because instead of having two outs with bases loaded and 1-0 out, the batter didn’t get put out and the score was 2-0 with bases loaded and one out. It changes everything,” Mowry said on Friday.
According to the rule, the batter is supposed to be out. The municipal section appeal committee will consider the protest on Tuesday morning and decide whether the game should be replayed from the third inning. It is likely that the committee will decide to postpone the game after the referees mishandled the decision on the pitch.
Rescheduling the game will be tricky with all West Valley League teams tied to two games a week. The timing of the rescheduled game could impact both teams’ pitching rotations and how they will face the league’s other opponent that week.
Taft 5, El Camino Real 2: Nathan Kerr took the win in four innings of work and two strikeouts. Matthew Leiterman scored a brace and scored two points. The Toreadors shared the series with ECR. Both teams are 1-1 in the West Valley League.
Granada Hills 8, Cleveland 1: The Highlanders are atop the West Valley League at 2-0 after this week thanks to Zach Perez, who had seven strikeouts in six innings on Friday. Andrew Cuervo hit a two RBI single and Brandon Garfinkel hit a triple RBI. Miles Ortiz hit a solo home run.
Crespi 8, Loyola 0: The Celts dropped out of Game 1 on Tuesday but took the series with wins on Thursday and Friday. Isaiah Magdaleno took the win with six strikeouts in five innings for Crespi, who now holds third place in the Mission League.
Chaminade 8, Germany 1: Peter Michael had nine strikeouts in five innings for the Eagles. Nolan Mowry went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Hunter Essang hit a solo home run. Chaminade ended the three-game Mission League sweep over Alemany with Friday’s win.
Quartz Hill 10, Knight 7: The Royals scored seven runs in the seventh inning to win the game. Logan Reddemann took the win with nine strikeouts over six innings, and was also 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Quartz Hill is 6-0 in the Golden League.
Calabasas 5, Oaks Christian 2: The Coyotes win the three-game Marmonte League series with wins Thursday and Friday after a loss Tuesday. This also puts Calabasas in the top spot. Sam Grunberg was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Westlake 6, Newbury Park 2: Paul Lizzul had two hits and two RBIs for the Warriors.
Kennedy 9, Sylmar 6: John Olague and Armando Garcia each hit a home run for the Cougars.
SOFTBALL
Birmingham 2, Granada Hills 1 (8 innings): Danielle Diaz hit a scoreless single to score Jessica Rose, who started the inning with a bunt single. Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Barba allowed just four hits.
El Camino Real 6, Esperanza 1: Sofia Fisher went 3 for 4 with two runs. Courtney Cohen was 2 for 4 with a home run. Brooke DeSmet allowed just three hits and took the circle victory.
