However, when the couple checked in, they were horrified after discovering the hidden camera in a cupboard opposite a bed.

Stoppa said she looked at a cabinet that was above the entrance to the room and saw a glow.

When she saw the glow, she told Bezerra that she thought there was a real camera.

She took a photo with her cell phone flash and a bright glow appeared that really looked like a camera lens.

The couple quickly reported the incident to the police before also filing a complaint with Airbnb.

Airbnb has become aware of the issue and has also issued the couple a full refund as they investigate and stand ready to assist local law enforcement with their investigation.

Local media reported that the owner of the rental is a foreign national.

Brazilian police are reportedly investigating the case.

Manualput hidden cameras in hotel rooms?

We have encountered various incidents where customers have spotted a scary camera in their hotel rooms. So it’s no surprise that we tend to think about paranoid possibilities every time we check into a new room at a hotel or Airbnb.

The idea that your private moments can be captured without your consent is enough to send a shiver down anyone’s spine. It’s the stuff of nightmares.

Fortunately, a security expert has shared his tips and tricks on how you can check hidden cameras in a Airbnb or hotel.

Marcus Hutchins (@malwaretech) posted a TikTok showing how easy it is to find hidden cameras. First, he says you should look for well-placed devices where a “creeper” might want to look, such as a fire alarm just above the bed, a shower head, or an alarm clock.

In the video, Hutchins uses the example of a fire alarm placed right above the bed to show how you can tell if there is a hidden camera.

He says one way to see if the device is a camera is to shine a bright light on it, which the couple did in the incident above. If you hit the lens of a camera, it will give a bluish sheen. Hutchins explains that you can now test this by turning on a light on your phone and observing how the camera appears when placed under a flashlight.

Hutchins also shared that this method works on one-way mirrors.

He noted that the front camera is the only one that tends to work because the rear camera has an IR filter.

Although Hutchins explained that the video did not take place at a real Airbnb and was staged for the purpose of the video, he added that the threat was still real.
