Ruth Lewis, 41, nutritionist and massage therapist from Bonnington, Edinburgh, and her husband Ross have been lease on their driveway since 2018.

She explained how a New Year’s Daythe couple were thinking about how to make more money and it occurred to them that they could use the empty driveway, which neither of them uses.

After hearing about the Your Parking Space website, which is taking a cut, the couple took the plunge and advertised the space online.

Talk to Edinburgh Live, Ruth said: “It was really simple. They do everything and when someone books you get a message with their contact details.

When they first listed the space, the couple charged £5 a day, wanting to provide an affordable price for visitors.

They increased the charge to £9 per day after seeing the price of other people’s free spaces in the area.

Last year, Ruth and Ross cashed in £1,500 renting the parking space, and the couple flew to Malaga with the proceeds.

Since this is her own driveway, Ruth has no barriers. Although it navigates well most of the time, it has encountered a few issues.

Ruth said: ‘Someone got the wrong address, he made a mistake and parked in someone else’s driveway. We didn’t know them and when they got home they found someone else’s car in their driveway. They phoned the police.

“Police, on talking to all the neighbours, found out we had rented our driveway and showed up at our door. Fortunately, the owner of the car was not far away.

Ruth explained that the “vast majority” of people using the space are people visiting Edinburgh for “a few days”.

Ruth added, “They can stay at an Airbnb that doesn’t have parking or see family.” And they book for a whole week or a weekend.
