A UCF student following Elon Musk’s jet has turned his attention to Russian oligarchs | Orlando Area News | Orlando

The University of Central Florida student who made a name for himself creating Twitter bots that follow the jet of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos has turned his attention to another bunch of oligarchs.

Given the Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions against Russia, rookie Jack Sweeney has heard calls to start following the rush of the oligarchs and President Vladimir Putin. He created two accounts – @RUOligarJets and @Putinjet – to track their whereabouts via available data.

Sweeney has shared in interviews that he has been in aircraft tracking for a long time. He gained national attention when his Musk following account drew the ire of the billionaire himself. Musk offered Sweeney a small fee of $5,000 to delete the account. Sweeney countered, asking for either a Tesla or an internship. Musk never responded.

Sweeney’s new fans asked him to follow oligarchs like Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich and natural gas billionaire Leonid Mikhelson. He agreed and noticed a big difference between the American elites he follows and their Russian counterparts.

“The planes of these oligarchs are absolutely insane,” Sweeney said. Bloomberg, noting that oligarchs tend to travel in commercial-sized planes. “Their planes are huge compared to other jets.”
