As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its ninth day, a fire broke out at a nuclear power plant after Russian troops fired on the area.

Security camera footage filmed on Friday and verified by The New York Times showed a burning building inside the Zaporizhia nuclear complex in southern Ukraine. The videos appeared to show people in vehicles shooting at buildings at the power plant, according to the newspaper.

The attack prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to warn of a serious threat after the attack on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

“If there is an explosion, it’s the end for everyone. The end for Europe. Evacuation from Europe,” Zelenskyy said, according to The Associated Press. “Only urgent action from Europe can stop the Russian troops. Don’t let Europe die from a nuclear power plant disaster.

Update at 4:26 a.m. EST on March 4: Russia’s lower house of parliament on Friday passed a bill that would penalize those who spread “false” information about Russian military actions in Ukraine by up to 15 years in prison, The Associated Press reports.

The bill is expected to pass the upper house of parliament before heading to President Vladimir Putin for final approval, according to the PA. If approved, the law could go into effect as early as Saturday, officials said.

Norwegian and Lithuanian leaders condemn Russian bombing of nuclear power plant

Update at 4:05 a.m. EST on March 4: Norwegian and Lithuanian leaders on Friday condemned Russian bombing that sparked a fire at Ukraine’s Zaporizhizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.

According to The Associated PressNorwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called the attack “consistent with madness”, while Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called the incident “nuclear terrorism” and urged world leaders to respond immediately to ” Russia’s nuclear crimes”.

Authorities said radiation did not reach dangerous levels during the fire, which was extinguished on PA reported.

UK Deputy PM calls Russian attack on nuclear power plant ‘reckless’

Australia freezes $33m in Russian funds

Update as of 2:40 a.m. EST on March 4: Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Friday that her country had frozen 45 million Australian dollars – or about 33 million US dollars – in Russian funds at an Australian financial institution, The Associated Press reports.

Payne did not identify the financial institution or owner of the funds, according to the PA.

Australia has targeted more than 350 Russians with sanctions, including President Vladimir Putin, PA reported.

Russian forces take control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

Update at 1:56 a.m. EST on March 4: Russian forces have taken control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine after a fire was extinguished, Ukraine’s state emergency service said in a statement on Friday.

The military administration said operational personnel ensure the safe operation of the facility, according to The Associated Press.

Update at 12:49 p.m. EST March 4: The fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine has been extinguished, the Ukrainian state emergency service said in a statement on Friday.

“At 06:20 (local time), the fire at the training building of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Enerhodar was extinguished. There were no fatalities or injuries,” the statement said.

Officials said the No. 1 reactor compartment was damaged, but this did not affect the safety of the power unit, The Associated Press reported.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

Google suspends advertising in Russia

Google said it suspended its advertising activities in the country, including search, YouTube and display marketing, the newspaper reported.

Boris Johnson will request a meeting of the UN Security Council

Update at 12:37 p.m. EST on March 4: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office has said it will call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after Russian troops in Ukraine attacked a nuclear power plant, The Associated Press reported.

Johnson’s office said the prime minister spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the early hours of the morning.

“The Prime Minister has said that the reckless actions of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin could now directly threaten the security of all of Europe,” Johnson’s office said in a statement. “He said (the UK) would do everything it could to ensure that the situation did not deteriorate further.”

A fire at a nuclear power plant broke out in a training building

Update at 12:05 a.m. EST on March 4: The fire that broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine on Friday started in a training building outside the main reactor complex, according to the emergency services of the Ukrainian state.

“From 05:20 (local time) units of the state emergency services responded to the fire at the training building of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant,” SES said in a statement on Telegram, according to CNN.
