Airbnb and the Tourism Board sign a memorandum of understanding to boost sustainable tourism through home sharing

By Aaron Humes: A partnership with renowned accommodation generator Airbnb aims to promote sustainable tourism in Belize, inviting tourists to experience the comforts of Belize up close and personal with its people.

Airbnb and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) agree mutual cooperation to share best practices globally for a modern and simple regulatory framework for short-term rentals to grow and diversify the product tourism in the country according to world demand.

Belize’s home-sharing community is a growing component of the local tourism industry and a significant asset to the country’s wealth. In this industry, the unrivaled global community of hosts and travelers on Airbnb has created a whole new way to travel and experience a destination.

Through its strong partnership with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), of which Belize is a member government, Airbnb works to boost tourism in the region and expand economic opportunity by promoting safe and authentic travel. In the Caribbean. Belize was recently featured in one such initiative, Discover the Caribbean, which aimed to promote tourism to destinations as they reopen safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Belize’s tourism industry grows, the Belize Tourism Board and Airbnb aim to encourage environmental sustainability while empowering local people and their communities to be the primary beneficiaries of this economic growth.

“The Belize Tourism Board is excited about this new cooperative agreement with Airbnb and working together to develop a fair and sustainable business environment for this important segment of Belize’s tourism offering. With exciting new features on its platform -form, Airbnb not only generates room inventory, but is also focused on creating authentic destination experiences, an area where Belize thrives and seeks to engage,” said Evan Tillett, director of tourism at the Belize Tourism Board.

“Belize is an important destination for Airbnb, and we are excited to continue working with BTB to build a strong and democratized tourism industry through homesharing that Belizeans can directly benefit from,” said Carlos Munoz, Head of of the Airbnb campaign, Public Policy and Communications for the Caribbean and Central America.
