Airbnb Announces Banning Some Customers From Making NYE Reservations

In Columbus alone, more than 3,500 people have been deterred by anti-party defenses from reserving entire house listings in the 2021 New Year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Airbnb is trying to combat disruptive parties and neighborhood nuisance by limiting some guests who make overnight bookings around New Years this year, according to the rental company.

The company said in output they plan to ban certain customers requesting one-day bookings in 11 different countries.

Who is banned? The company said those with no positive account history or no previous bookings will likely see the ban.

Booking restrictions will be in effect over New Years weekend.

Last year, 340,000 people experienced a block or redirect when trying to book through Airbnb as the company works to reduce party incidents. They estimate the bans led to a 56% drop in incident rates at New Year’s Eve parties during last year’s trial.

Naba Banerjee, Director of Trusted Products and Operations at Airbnb, said, “Stays happen every night on Airbnb around the world, with the vast majority of guests and hosts respecting neighbors and providing benefits to their local community. . These proactive defenses will help promote responsible travel and prevent rare instances of unwanted behavior, and allow hosts, guests and communities to enjoy their holiday celebrations with greater confidence.

The company released a statement saying:

“We know that the overwhelming majority of travelers are respectful neighbors and travelers, and that the vast majority of hosts share their homes responsibly. Likewise, we are committed to reducing instances of unauthorized parties and helping hosts to protect themselves from neighborhood disturbances and at certain times of the year, such as New Year’s Eve, may attract a higher risk of unauthorized or disruptive parties.

To this end, we are introducing restrictions on certain types of bookings during New Year’s Eve. These restrictions will see a ban on one-night bookings of entire house listings for customers with no positive account history – or no previous bookings – on the platform. We are also introducing tighter restrictions for those same customers trying to book two- and three-night reservations, with a focus on local reservation attempts. »
