Airbnb is looking for someone to live rent-free in Sicily for a year

If you have the ability to work from anywhere in the world and have the personality to host guests, Airbnb has an offer for you.

The company is looking for someone live for free for a year and host for a Italian heritage house in Sicily. The winning contestant will have the chance to move the restored designer home and bring along a friend, partner or family.

The house is located in Samba, an Italian village suffering from a declining population. Through a variety of cultural heritage programs and competitions like this Airbnb plan, city leaders hope to encourage community investment and attract a younger population to the area.

“The beauty of this campaign is that it gives a second chance not only to an abandoned heritage house in the heart of our village, but also to the person who moves into it,” said Mayor Leonardo Ciaccio. “We see it as a designer makeover for home and host.”

According to the rental company, ideal candidates must be committed to leading tasks and contributing to the life of the village of Sambuca.

“We are looking for someone who wants to live with the local people and participate in all the important moments of the community, from grape harvest to olive picking, and we look forward to welcoming whoever is selected,” said Ciaccio.

So what exactly are you committing to?

The house is a three-story building typical of Sicilian architecture with a completely redesigned interior intended to match the local landscape in tone and color.

The ground floor has a small living room and a master bedroom with a king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom.

The first floor has a living room, kitchen, work area, bathroom and a loft bedroom with a king-size bed.

The top floor includes another living area with a queen-size sleeper sofa.

The candidate chosen as host obtains his choice of rooms, the second being put up for rent on Airbnb.

The house is located in Sambuca, a town of about 6,000 inhabitants. It is steeped in Italian and North African culture and architecture, and strives to attract millennials from the big cities to a simpler way of life and the ability to work remotely.

Apps are taken now for applicants who are at least 18 years old, speak conversational English and are available to relocate to Sambuca from June 30. They must commit for 3 consecutive months, although the winner can stay all year without rent.

Candidates must commit to renting the second bedroom for at least 9 months of the year. Applicants will retain all income from the host during the year.

Candidates will participate in a mentorship program, learn Italian, take cooking classes and more while at home.
