Alabama Snow Forecast Birmingham Winter Weather Advisory

A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of central Alabama as rain is expected to turn to snow Sunday night. A winter storm warning has been issued for several counties in northern Alabama. A winter storm warning is in effect until 3 a.m. Monday in some northern Alabama counties, including Jackson, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Morgan. The NWS said heavy snowfall, up to two to three inches, is expected in those areas. Travel could become very dangerous. The Alabama Department of Transportation said it plans to mobilize crews at 6 p.m. to monitor the roads and deal with them if necessary. ALDOT said crews will be concentrated in the northern areas near Interstate 65, I-22 and I-459. – WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY – WHAT: Snow expected. At 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Birmingham’s National Weather Service shared this update on the winter weather threat:

“UPDATE: For those cold-season fans who waned during our recent record-breaking heat, a dynamic storm system is configured to usher in cooler air with an additional opportunity for snowflakes this evening !

“During the 3 p.m. hour, light snow and a mixture of rain / snow were reported along parts of Interstate 55 in Mississippi. This transition to wintry weather is expected to shift through the central Alabama between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. – western communities first, eastern communities later.

“ACCUMULATIONS: Due to the recent heat, ground temperature maps show the ground to be quite warm right now. Keep in mind that the amounts will vary in the winter weather warning zone – winners and losers as they say.

“IMPACTS: Freezing temperatures will spread overnight. This could result in slippery road conditions overnight through Monday morning due to the runoff from rain last night as well as precipitation this evening. “
