American TikToker goes viral for Edinburgh pronunciation and wrong location
When it comes to pronouncing names of cities that we don’t know very well, it can be a challenge.
And in the process, we hope not to mess it up and embarrass ourselves.
However, for some Americans, that may be exactly what they just did with many Scots having to defend their own city.

Uploading to TikTok, @patry.ruiz asked her American friends to pronounce English cities with the Spaniard herself.
The words they had to try to pronounce were:
- worcester
- Towchester
- Peterborough
- Torquay
- Cheltenham
- Edinburgh
- Leominster
- Llanelli
- Tewkesbury
- Leicester
- Gloucester
After watching the video, Scots are doing what Scots do best – defending their country – and it seems no one was impressed with the way they pronounced the capital.
But it didn’t stop there, many pointed out that Edinburgh is actually not an English city but a Scottish city and people were quick to point this out – whilst of course being friendly.
Speaking to the comments section of the video, one said: “You should have written UK cities! I know some Scots might be offended that you called Edinburgh in English by mistake.”

Another added: “You didn’t just call Edinburgh an English city.”
“When did our capital Edinburgh cross the border into England,” a third commented.
In response, the language teacher added: “Apologies to Scotland! Edinburgh is obviously not English – should have said so. British but I didn’t know Edinburgh and Llaneli were on the list.”
