Arrest made Friday night in shooting at Duplin County football game

WALLACE, NC (WNCT) – The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the suspect believed to be responsible for the shooting that occurred during the high school football game between Wallace-Rose Hill and James Kenan on Friday.

Detectives from the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office arrested 20-year-old Rajon Jarmel Faison of Warsaw for discharging a firearm, inciting a riot, carrying a concealed firearm on school property and disorderly conduct during the game played at Legion Stadium in Wallace.

Faison was placed in the Duplin County Jail on a $100,000 guaranteed bond.

James Kenan led Wallace-Rose Hill 31-28 with 25 seconds left on Friday when the incident happened. According to the sheriff’s office, the game was halted with Wallace-Rose Hill lining up for an even field goal when shots were fired from the Wallace-Rose Hill grandstand area.

Fans and players were seen fleeing the area. Legion Stadium was cleaned and the game was called off. After more than 30 minutes, the two schools have agreed to return to finish the game Saturday morning at 9 a.m., as the Class 2-A playoff standing depends on the result.

On Friday evening, the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that shots were fired. A person was arrested “for the brawl” but “the shooter was not in custody at the time”. Officials said they were confident “that the person or persons responsible will be identified and charged appropriately.”

Officials said everyone was safe and there were no injuries.

Both teams picked up the slack on Saturday morning with Wallace-Rose Hill scoring his field goal to lead the game into overtime. The Bulldogs got a touchdown from Irving Brown and an interception from Xzavier Pearsall to seal a 38-31 victory. WRH clinched second place in the Central East Conference with the victory.
