BCS says more than 60% of students are enrolled for the next school year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The school bells will ring on August 8 for Birmingham City School students and district leaders say so far so good.

Birmingham City School leaders said more than 60 per cent of pupils have signed up for the next school year, which starts on Monday.

This means around 8,000 pupils are still unenrolled, but school leaders hope the number will increase in the coming days.

“It’s normal for enrollment to be down just before school starts, but we’re proud to say here at Epic, our enrollment is up and most of our students are fully enrolled and ready first. day”, Principal of Epic Elementary School, Aulundria Grace.

Registration for the 2022-2023 school year opened in April, and district leaders have been trying different ways to entice parents and students to register.

Grace said registering students on the first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the school year.

β€œWe welcome our students, we inform our parents of the expectations of the school, the students the supplies they need, the teaching takes place on the first day. So we want to make sure our students are prepared, ready to learn, because we have a whole school year filled with learning and we want to start learning,” Grace explained.

And Birmingham City Schools has made it easy for parents and guardians to enroll their children –open an online portalso they don’t have to queue on the first day of class.

β€œAnd parents can upload all the required documents such as proof of residency, vaccination forms and other important documents they will need for their scholarship recipient. We even have a registration team that is there throughout the summer to help parents.

It’s not too late to enroll your student and the enrollment team can also help you with technology, if needed.
