Be ignited! Spaceship-themed Pittsburgh home hits the market for $199,000

an eclectic Pittsburgh house has landed on the market again, and its wild design has already made the buzz on social networks.

At first glance, the 1,475 square foot brick home looks like an average home. But the trippy interior tells a different story.

“When you walk through the front door, it looks like a ranch-style house; but the previous owner cut the floor down to basement level, so it’s all open,” explains the listing agent. Chads Mullinaireof Berkshire Hathaway The Preferred Realty.

Mullinary explains that all of the unique changes were made by the home’s previous owner, and the current owners loved the original spaceship theme.

“They are moving, otherwise they would have stayed here,” notes Mullinary.

In addition to the now open floor plan, the home’s unique design features a dining room that resembles a spaceship’s command center, with a pocket door that leads to the galley kitchen.

“The spacecraft’s dining room was designed using many parts that the previous owner had salvaged from an Apache helicopter,” says Mullinary. “He was going through a time in his life, where creating this unique design was kind of an escape.”

Listed for an affordable $199,000, the three-bedroom home was built in 1969.

A sunken living room features a built-in wardrobe, tall oak beams, hardwood floors and a brick fireplace. A spiral staircase provides easy access to both levels of the house. To the left of the fireplace, a wooden ladder leads to a raised library.

The downstairs living room also features a floor-to-ceiling space-themed mural.

The current owner, who purchased the home in 2020 for $152,500, made some modifications: fresh paint and flooring, as well as a new roof.

The backyard includes an above ground pool that needs a new liner and other updates. And with a little TLC, this space could be transformed into a private oasis.

The owners have made a few tweaks here and there over the past few years. While on board with the home’s outer space vibe, they apparently felt differently from its tropical-themed rooms.

“The bedroom was originally designed as a cabin filled with sand,” says Mullinary. “The current owners removed the sand but kept the cabana style bed. There was also a bathroom – which had a jungle theme – which is now more traditional in style.”

So who wants a pad with an unusual design? It turns out that themed houses are popular in the short term rentals.

“It’s such a unique house,” observes Mullinary. “It would make an awesome Airbnb; or it could go for a young couple, an investor, or the right family who loves style.”

He adds that the location, in a quiet suburb of Pittsburgh, is also an attractive perk.

“The Holiday Park neighborhood is located in Plum, which is in the eastern suburbs,” says Mullinary. “It’s a desirable area to live in…so it would make a great family home.”
