IRONTON, Missouri – Located in the town of Ironton in southeastern Missouri, TR Goulding Castle sits on 3.89 acres at the base of Shepherd Mountain. At 2,270 square feet, this historic property is one of the truly unique and wonderful residential landmarks in the state.

The castle, which is now available for overnight stays on Airbnb for around $350/night, borders a 640-acre city-owned wilderness atop Shepherd Mountain. It was auctioned in 2012 after having housed the Misselhorn family since 1999. They have done extensive work on the property including cosmetic upgrades, a new water heater and furnace, and a new rubber roof (just to name a few).

Inside this 3 bedroom, 1-1/2 bath stone structure you will find everything that needs to be recently renovated with a style that only matches the facade of the chateau. The first floor includes the kitchen and a formal dining room. The second floor contains three bedrooms, a full bathroom with granite shower and tub, and a veranda surrounded by stone and cedar walls with a cedar ceiling. The third floor consists only of the tower room and offers four arched windows for a view of the entire property.

The castle was built in 1846 by Dr TR Goulding of England. Dr Goulding apparently missed the English style of architecture, so he created his own castle in the Ozarks, built of locally quarried limestone and granite, with a three-story tower and a spiral staircase.
