BIG designs one of Germany’s ‘healthiest’ towers in Berlin
BIG designs one of Berlin’s most ambitious skyscrapers
Conceived by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)the ‘EDGE East Side Berlin‘ great height Desk tower is currently under construction. In recent years, the ambitious project has been the subject of long discussions and massive protests by some groups and activists against its implementation. However, it is designed with careful and conscientious application of leading sustainability practices, and it is designed to be “one of the healthiest skyscrapers” in Germany.
Located on central Warschauer Street, which serves as a bridge between two of Berlin’s most vibrant and artistic suburbs (Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg), the tower will rise 142 meters, creating a new architectural landmark for the cosmopolitan city. The striking façade of the project is clad in generous amounts of glazing, offering sweeping views of the Berlin skyline. Designed to be primarily used by Amazon, it takes the unofficial name ‘Amazon Tower’.connecting two of Berlin’s liveliest and most artistic suburbs: Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg | all images by EDGE tech
BIG’s design promotes sustainability and well-being
Conceived by the world famous firm Bjarke Ingels and built by EDGE Technologies, the skyscraper uses innovative, breathable architecture that promotes sustainability and well-being. The project uses circular products and VOC-free materials, as well as world-class energy management. Inside, the building will house more than 65,000 m² of office space, served by 14 elevators, including eight innovative KONE double-decker elevators. These can reach a speed of 21 km/h, taking only 20 seconds to reach the roof from the ground floor.
According to development company, the final design incorporates contemporary urban demands and natural elements to “create airy spaces that energize and replenish”. EDGE East Side is part of a new wave of healthy buildings that embrace the idea that offices should not just serve a function but engage the communities around them. Thus, its transparent design creates user-centric spaces inviting visitors and pedestrians to enter and discover. ‘We see design and technology as key to creating workspaces that embrace sustainability while improving everyone’s well-being.
