Birmingham City make decision on Bowyer’s future

Birmingham City are preparing to sack Lee Bowyer at the end of the season, Football Insider understand.

This site revealed last month (April 17) that the 45-year-old was fighting for his job despite the team not being relegated.

But a Birmingham City source said Football Insider that club bosses are considering firing Bowyer and appointing a new manager.

A key factor is that the former Charlton Athletic boss has a strained relationship with Craig Gardner, who was appointed technical director by the club last summer.

Bowyer he has just over 12 months left on his contract at St. Andrew’s.

The Blues appointed the Englishman as coach a year ago after Aitor Karanka left.

In his first season in charge, Bowyer achieved an 18th place finish in the Championship.

However, there has been little to no improvement this year, with the club currently sitting 20th in the table with one game of the season remaining.

Birmingham are winless in their last five league games after a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City on Saturday.

Talk to club media after the match (May 1), Bowyer said he was “disappointed” with the result but not with his team’s performance.

The Blues host Blackburn Rovers at St. Andrew’s on Saturday in what could be the last game of Bowyer’s tenure.

Bowyer has won 17 of his 58 games in charge of Birmingham and has a points-per-game average of just 1.16.

In other news, a source has revealed that former Derby boss Phillip Cocu is a leading candidate to replace Tony Mowbray at Blackburn Rovers.
