Birmingham mayor announces executive leadership team for second term

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has announced the city’s leadership appointments for his second term, which begins on November 23, 2021.

Woodfin has re-appointed Chief of Staff Cedric Sparks and Senior Advisor and Chief Strategist Ed Fields. Kevin Moore, who currently serves as COO, will assume the role of CFO. The current deputy chief of operations, Chaz Mitchell, will become chief of operations. As previously announced, Melissa Smiley has been appointed Chief Accountability Officer.

All appointments will take effect on November 23.

Sparks, Fields, Moore, Mitchell and Smiley are currently part of the mayor’s executive leadership team. Other team members have been reappointed including Woodfin Executive Director Sylvia Bowen, Senior Director of Government Affairs Earl Hilliard, Jr., Director of Communications Rick Journey, City Counsel Nicole King and Director of human resources Jill Madajczyk. Kelvin Datcher will serve as Senior Advisor for Special Projects. Chanda Temple, who currently holds the post of Public Information Officer, will serve as the Senior Project Manager.

In line with Woodfin’s commitment to inclusion, more than 40 percent of all appointed leaders in the city – including senior directors, directors and deputy directors – are women.
