WVTM 13. TYLER, THANK YOU SO MUCH. AN ITEM ON THE AGENDA OF BIRMINGHAM EDUCATION BOARD MEETING TODAY IS TO RECOGNIZE THE ROBOTICS TEAM AT MARTHA GASKINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. SO REMEMBER LAST MONTH THEY BECAME EASTERN USA CHAMPIONS. WE TOLD YOU ABOUT IT. AND NOW THEY ARE HONORED FOR THEIR HARD WORK, TAKING A TRIP TO THE SPACE CENTER IN FLORIDA. VERY COOL, RIGHT? WVTM 13 JARVIS ROBERTSON IS LIVE TONIGHT IN BIRMINGHAM. JARVIS, WHAT DOES THIS TRIP MEAN TO THESE CHILDREN? WELL, BRITTANY, THIS IS DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY A SPECIAL TIME FOR THE MARTHA GASKINS ELEMENTARY ROBOTICS TEAM NOW. AT THE BEGINNING, THEY WERE COLLECTING MONEY TO PAY FOR THE TRIP. HOWEVER, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT DECIDED TO STEP UP AND MAKE THIS REALIZE FOR THEM. WHAT SPECIFICALLY IS ONLINE? RAHEEM WASHINGTON IS IN FIFTH GRADE AT MARTHA GASKINS ELEMENTARY. HIS FAVORITE SUBJECT IS MATHEMATICS. BECAUSE I LOVE ADDING NUMBERS AND MULTIPLYING NUMBERS AND MAKING NUMBERS. HE IS PART OF THE ROBOTICS TEAM THAT WILL MOVE TO THE SPACE CENTER IN FLORIDA. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO FLORIDA AND I WILL BE ON A PLANE FOR MY FIRST TIME. THIS TRIP COMES AFTER THE TEAM RECENTLY WON THE EASTERN US CHAMPION TITLE. I HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS. BIRMINGHAM CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS GRACIOUSLY AND GRACIOUSLY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE ENTIRE TRIP. THEIR TEACHER, DR. YUVRAJ VERMA, SAYS TEAM EXPERIENCE CAN BE FUN, SHE UNDERSTANDS WHAT STEM REALLY IS. NOT ONLY DO THEY LEARN ANY CONTENT AND STANDARDS WE NEED TO TEACH AND SCHOOL, BUT THEN THEY ACTUALLY GET TO EXPAND ON THAT AND THE REAL WORLD AND IN AN APPLIED FRAMEWORK AND THOSE SAME STANDARDS. PRINCIPAL DR. HERBERT BLACKMAN SAYS, CAN HELP TEACHERS MEET STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE AND CONTINUE TO EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE BEYOND THE DISTRICT. AS STANDARDS CHANGE AND EDUCATE, WE WANT TO ENSURE ALL OUR STUDENTS ARE WELL EQUIPPED. YES, THEY HAVE ACCESS TO YOU TUBE. YES, THEY HAVE ACCESS TO DIFFERENT ONLINE RESOURCES. BUT BEING PHYSICALLY PRESENT SOMEWHERE IS IMPORTANT. OF THE NINE STUDENTS LEAVING, EIGHT OF THEM HAVE NEVER BEEN ON A PLANE. SEVEN NEVER LEFT THEIR ROBUCK COMMUNITY FOR WASHINGTON. HE IS HAPPY TO SHARE THE GOOD THINGS OF BEING PART OF THE ROBOTICS TEAM WITH HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR A TIME. WHEN I LOOK, YOU KNOW, THEY SAY, KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. KIDS, NOW THIS TRIP IS GOING TO BE MAY 2-5, LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE, I’M JARVIS ROBERTSON, WVT
