Classes at Louisville public schools are canceled to fight the disease sweeping through students and staff

Louisville Public Schools canceled classes Thursday due to an upsurge in illness among students and staff.

The disease swept through the district building, which houses K-12, on Wednesday, leaving staff and students with flu-like symptoms, said district superintendent Andrew Farber. He did not know the total number of people who had fallen ill.

The district had already scheduled Friday as the day off. Authorities also chose to cancel classes on Thursday, Farber said, so buildings could be cleaned and sick people could recover at home.

“We just wanted to be extremely careful,” he said. “We want to protect our families, our staff and our community.”

Farber said the district is working closely with the Sarpy/Cass Health Department on the matter.
