Compensation for the explosion in the November 20 district is slow to come

During heavy rains, water forced its way through the superficial repairs carried out by the company.

On April 18 of this year, an explosion took place in the 20 de Noviembre district and a condo was destroyed due to an accumulation of domestic gas. One person was injured. Construction splinters thrown all over the surrounding properties ended up affecting the nearest neighbors and since then none of the damage has been paid for by the owners of the condominium.

Neighbors like Silvia (pseudonym) said her house looked like a war zone. “I wasn’t there but I was talking on the phone with my partner when out of the blue I heard the explosion and then a silence followed by screams. At the moment I felt horrible because I didn’t didn’t know what was going on.

His partner was there. She explained that after the explosion, she simply reacted by taking their cats with her outside the house, which was unrecognizable.

“The next day I had to go to the doctor using health care from my job. I had acoustic trauma, the doctor said. Since that day, I had headaches and dizziness all the time. That I move my head quickly and then return to the normal passion of my head, I feel dizzy.

Silvia and her partner agreed not to add the psychological and physical side effects to the construction company repairs that they should have covered. The only thing they ask now is to have their car repaired – US$1,600. Silvia pointed out that because their car is out of order, they had problems getting to work, which caused them difficulties in their work.

A mechanical workshop next to the condos is still awaiting payment for damages. Alejandro Epifanio, manager of this workshop, pointed out that three of their customers’ cars had suffered serious damage, and the manager in charge of evaluating the compensation promised that they would reimburse them later, but for the moment they must pay out of their own pocket.

“We can’t just tell our customers that their cars won’t be ready for four years while everything is worked out. We paid 15,000 pesos (750 USD) for these three vehicles, but we were sued by the owner of a fourth car. We have reached an agreement with them, but we are still waiting for it,” stressed Alejandro. “These things should be sorted out now, I don’t know what the prosecutor’s office is doing about it. It seems to me that it is only a matter of time before it happens again elsewhere.”

Silvia expressed concern about the way things are working in Tijuana regarding condo constructions in neighborhoods like hers. “First of all, this building was not for the domestic market, in fact, there was a Korean-American citizen who owned it, and they are buying them to turn them into Airbnbs. Also, people started to move in when construction wasn’t fully completed, but since they are privately owned, I think they can get permissions immediately whenever they want.

For now, the neighbors still don’t know when their damages will be reimbursed, and they don’t see any payoff coming soon. According to them, during the recent heavy rains, water has forced its way through the superficial repairs carried out by the company, so the damage may worsen and increase the repair bill that they think will end up. pay out of pocket.
