Crash ends DC carjacking suspect – NBC4 Washington

A man on a cross-country road trip had his car stolen at gunpoint in broad daylight in DC, and an accident caused the suspected thief to pull over before he was arrested by the authorities.

DC police say it all started at 12th and C streets in the southeast.

The victim, Brendan Nagle, had just arrived at his Airbnb while visiting the east coast of his native Los Angeles. As he was unloading his car, he was approached by a man wearing a ski mask.

“You can feel time, like everything is happening in slow motion,” Nagle said. “I went to get my pup’s crate from the car and he came over with a gun and said, ‘Give me the keys’.”

Nagle said he complied, and later a helpful bystander drove him in and followed the carjacker.

The thief was then hit by another car, approximately 3 miles from Jay Street NE and Kenilworth Terrace NE, and pulled over.

“Luckily it was a busy neighborhood and like four people called 911 at the same time,” Nagle said.

Police arrived soon after and arrested the suspect, whose name has not been released. Authorities said they recovered a firearm.

“Simply crazy. It’s a very emotional time,” Nagle said. “All things considered – he didn’t like the gun whipping me or anything. It was just kind of like ‘Give me your keys’, and probably the wisest thing to do is just give your keys.”

According to police data, there have been 183 carjackings involving firearms so far this year, compared to 112 this time last year in 2021.
